Equipment Safety at North Star Camp

Maple Grove, MN (July 6, 2017) – Over the past few weeks, rumors have circulated regarding the safety of the horse program and climbing wall at North Star Camp. The safety of our campers and staff is extremely important to us. To that end, we have implemented additional safe practices this season. Prior to the camp season beginning, new equipment was purchased for both the horse barn and the rock-climbing wall, including new helmets for all riders and new belay systems for all rock climbers. All arrows in the archery program were either replaced or repaired. All the ropes were replaced for the waterfront program, and one of the inner tubes was replaced as well. Two lifeguards ride in the boats at all times, and all riders and lifeguards wear lifejackets. Additionally, we have implemented a pre-check and post-check of every boat for every ride to ensure the boats are in top working condition every time. During staff week, all staff were trained on the camp’s safety procedures, so that every staff member would know what to do in an emergency. Specifically, all staff members received training in anti-bullying, CPR and first aid. Staff responsible for the rock climbing wall were trained how to use the new equipment and best practices for safety. Staff members responsible for the horse program came to North Star Camp a couple weeks early to begin training and working with the horses. The horse barn director maintains a level two certificate through the Certified Horsemanship Association. Most importantly, we believe all camp staff are called into ministry at North Star Camp. At the beginning of the camp season, we began that ministry with a communion service and anointing of not just the camp staff, but also all the equipment. We entrusted the safety of our camp, it’s facilities, programs, staff and campers into God’s hands. North Star Camp is a place for our campers to have a life changing experience with God, and providing a safe experience is one way we can ensure this happens. Thank you for your continued prayers and support of North Star Camp. Should you have any questions, please contact Savannah Carlson at scarlson@mnsda.com.
